BOTOX injections help thousands of men and women feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin by smoothing away visible lines and wrinkles on the face. While BOTOX injections are fairly routine and can be completed in just minutes, it’s important for patients to know what to do and what not to do after their treatment in order to ensure the most natural-looking and longest-lasting results possible.

At Wellspring Medical Spa & Aesthetics, Dr. Matthew Adam Graham and our team of expert injectors help Thomasville, GA patients look and feel their best with a wide range of cosmetic injectables, including BOTOX wrinkle relaxers. Here, you’ll learn more about what to expect after getting BOTOX injections, including when your results may become visible and what things to avoid following treatment.

What does BOTOX do?

BOTOX is an injectable neurotoxin that works to temporarily paralyze a muscle. When it comes to facial rejuvenation, BOTOX injections are highly effective in smoothing out dynamic lines and wrinkles – meaning those associated with facial expressions and muscle movements. Common concerns that can be dramatically improved with BOTOX injections include:

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines
  • Brow lines
  • Lines between the brows
  • 11 lines
  • Glabellar lines
  • Crow’s feet

What to expect during a BOTOX appointment

During your appointment for BOTOX at Wellspring Medical Spa & Aesthetics, you’ll relax in one of our private treatment rooms. To begin, the skin will be cleansed to remove any makeup or debris. Your injector will then ask you to make a series of facial expressions, including smiling and frowning, which will allow the target injection sites to be identified and marked. Using a fine gauge needle and syringe, the appropriate amount of BOTOX will then be injected into certain facial muscles.

Patients typically tolerate the procedure, which takes just minutes, without the need for a numbing agent. On average, patients can expect the effects of BOTOX to become apparent after about 5 – 7 days. To ensure a pleasing aesthetic outcome and to avoid unwanted complications, patients should follow BOTOX aftercare instructions closely.

What should I not do after BOTOX?

Four important things to avoid following BOTOX injections include:

1. Rubbing your face: Gently touching your face to wash it or apply makeup is perfectly safe after BOTOX injections, but patients should avoid rubbing their face, getting a massage or facial, or otherwise applying significant pressure to the face for 1 – 2 days. This can potentially cause the BOTOX product to migrate to another area, resulting in an unwanted or unexpected aesthetic outcome.

2. Sleeping on your front or side: Again, these sleeping positions can place undue pressure on the face and cause new BOTOX injections to move to other areas. Patients should plan to sleep on their back for 1 – 2 nights following BOTOX treatment.

3. Getting overheated: Strenuous physical activity, hot baths, and sun/heat exposure should be avoided for at least 24 hours after getting BOTOX.

4. Drinking alcohol: Because alcohol dilates blood vessels, drinking alcohol after getting BOTOX can prolong post-treatment bleeding and bruising and ultimately delay a patient’s healing.

With proper BOTOX aftercare, a healthy lifestyle, and an experienced cosmetic injector, patients can enjoy remarkably natural, stunning, and long-lasting results that can be maintained with routine BOTOX injections 3 – 4 times per year.
